Kelso vs Royal High Corstorphine – Shedden Park 13/05/2023

Battle of the Bowling Attacks

Hosting Royal High Corstorphine 2nd XI on Ladies Day at a glorious Shedden Park Kelso sadly lost out in what was a low scoring thriller.

Loosing the toss and being put into bat Kelso were hoping for a good opening stand. Sadly however Kelso captain G. Davidson could not build on last weekend’s performance with the bat being caught and bowled in the second over by R.J. Clarkson for 1 leaving Kelso 4-1. Another looking to continue his fine form with the bat was J. Recourt. J. Frame and Recourt managed to see away the new ball and with very little risk moved the score to 24-1 before J. Recourt was cleaned bowled by D.R. Graveling for 7. J. Dickson came and went shortly after being cleaned bowled by RHC leg-spinner J. West. With the score at 31-3 from 14 overs Kelso batsman J. Frame and C. Davidson went on the attack, J. Frame dug in deep and played some classy strokes before he fell for 23 leaving Kelso 48-4 in the 21st over.

The RHC bowling continued to be very tight giving very little for the Kelso batsman to capitalise on. The partnership between D. Stewart and C. Davidson added 13 before Stewart was cleaned bowled by West for 3. C. Dedekind went for 2 to give West his third wicket of the afternoon before I. Worth bowled J. Connelly for 0. C. Davidson pushed hard to find the boundary a couple of times on his way to 30 before he fell with the score at 86-8. Some valuable runs from the lower order gave Kelso a sub-par total of 89.

With only 89 on the board, it was crucial that Kelso went hunting for wickets early and that is exactly what happened. Young opening bowler C. Pollhammer picked up a wicket with his first ball of the day as he dismissed P. Cusick for 2. With the score 29-1 and RHC looking in relative comfort, C. Davidson was brought into the attack to try and swing the game back into Kelso’s favour. That is exactly what he did picking up not one, not two, but three wickets in his first over. Dismissing A. Abid for 13 and I. Worth and F. King for 0 respectively the game was brought back to life as RHC ended the 7th over 29-4. A series of tight bowling and excellent fielding from this young Kelso side managed to restrict RHC to 34-4 as we entered the 12th over. G. Davidson then got his first wicket of the afternoon dismissing N. Murray for 1 and the visitors were struggling at 34-5.

C. Davidson then dismissed H. Waterston for 5 and Kelso were 4 wickets away from victory with the score at 45-6. Kelso brought J. Frame into the attack hoping he could emulate his bowling performance at Carlton last week and that he did picking up a wicket in his first over dismissing J. Joseph for 13. Frame then got his second with a lovely delivery that trapped J. West in-front of the stumps for 28. Kelso only needed 2 more wickets and with the score 75-8 it was going to be a tight finish. J. Connelly was re-introduced into the attack and got the wicket of R.J. Clarkson for 7 and Kelso were nearly there. Unfortunately, Kelso could not get the final RHC wicket in what was an agonisingly close game.

Kelso look to bounce back next weekend as the play Tranent and Preston Village in Prestonpans.

Ladies Day - 13th May 2023

The sun shone brightly on Saturday and a fantastic day was had by all who attended 'Hoedown themed' Ladies Day at Kelso Cricket Club. Thank you to everyone who supported the event. Special thanks to Park Motors for their continued support of the club. We were delighted that could be with us on Saturday to be photographed with the team and the ladies sporting their best cowgirl outfits! A special mention also to Julie Dickson for sponsoring the match and Susan Holmes for sponsoring the match ball. Julie had the honour of choosing the Player of the Match and this deservedly went to Callum Davidson who had a great day with the ball and the bat, he was the top scorer with 30 runs and took 4 wickets for 12 runs off 8 overs. Congratulations Callum!

Thank you also to the wonderful Pat and Alan Hirst for catering the event, and to Linda Frame and Susan Holmes for their brilliant organisation, thinking of every detail.

Thanks again to everyone who made Ladies Day a great success. We are looking forward to the season ahead and many more sunny days at Kelso Cricket Club.

Kelso vs Carlton 3rds – Grange Loan 07/05/2023

Recourt Continues Kelso Rejuvenation

Kelso make it two wins from two with a comfortable victory against Carlton 3rds at Grange Loan on Sunday.

After winning the toss Kelso captain Greg Davidson decided to bowl on what was a firm but damp and green wicket at Grange Loan in Edinburgh. The downpours on Saturday had put some doubt that the game would go ahead but thanks to the excellent work from the Carlton ground staff play was able to start on time.

Kelso got themselves off to a great start with J. Connelly picking up where he left off last week dismissing young Carlton opener J. Stronach for 0 in the first over, with a delivery that nipped away from the right-handed batsman and caught the outside edge going through to give J. Recourt his first dismissal of the day. The new Kelso wicketkeeper was back in the action in the eighth over creating something out of nothing with a very sharp stumping off the bowling of G. Davidson to restrict the hosts to 24-2.

The tenth over brought C. Davidson into the attack and Kelso continued to build the pressure. With the run rate slowing C. Davidson picked up the wicket of C.A. Sale for 15, which was well caught at short fine leg by K. Burns who steadied himself under the high ball to take the catch. G. Davidson picked up his second of the afternoon in the next over teaming up with Recourt behind the stumps to dismiss I. Foley for 10 leaving the hosts in trouble at 47 for 4.

This is where Kelso really started to turn the screw and with C. Davidson picking up his second wicket of the afternoon just after the drinks the hosts were struggling at 68-5. Young Kelso bowler K. Keddie was brought into the attack and the youngster continued from where C. Davidson had left off building the pressure and picking himself up his first two wickets for Kelso 1st XI. Both catches taken by J. Recourt behind the stumps to give him his fourth and fifth dismissal of the afternoon. J. Frame was soon into the action firstly dismissing S. Smith thanks to a sharp catch at point by J. Gibson he then went and got himself another in the same over leaving him for figures of 0-2 for the afternoon. J. Connelly picked up the final Carlton wicket restricting the hosts to 116 All Out in the 37th Over.

With a target of 117 Kelso openers G. Davidson and J. Frame looked to get their side off to a positive start. Having looked in relative comfort Carlton got the breakthrough in the 8th over when J. Frame was caught in two minds and was caught and bowled by F. Foley for 8, leaving Kelso 18-1. J. Recourt came to the crease looking to build on his start last week and build on it he did. With some classy strokes and good rotation of the strike Recourt and G. Davidson were able to build a partnership of 43 before Davidson fell for 17 being cleaned bowled by D. Firth. Recourt continued to take the attack to Carlton putting the bad ball away to the boundary while continuing to rotate the strike. Young J. Dickson fell for 4 being bowled by Carlton spinner V. Nagrajan, before a moment of madness from Kelso all-rounder C. Davidson saw him fall the next ball as he was run out trying to steal a second run. The afternoon belonged to Recourt who along with his six dismissals behind the stumps brought up his 50 with a lovely, lofted shot over mid-off, to get Kelso within 15 runs of the win. The wicketkeeper batsman eventually finished 61 not out as he guided Kelso to back-to-back wins and a victory margin of 5 wickets. Kelso look to keep the momentum going on Saturday as they welcome RHC to Shedden Park on Ladies Day.

Kelso vs Dunfermline & Carnegie – Shedden Park 29/04/2023

The Clouds Break

Hosting Dunfermline & Carnegie at a bitterly cold Shedden Park, our First XI kicked off our campaign with a nail-biting win.

After losing the toss, and being sent into bat in testing conditions, Dunfermline & Carnegie took control early with only one of the top five batsmen reaching double figures as Kelso slumped to 25-5. J. Connelly and C. Dedekind stood resilient and steadied the ship in the middle overs with an important partnership. C. Dedekind went shortly after drinks for 12 with the score 55-6. Connelly then went on the offensive to try and give Kelso a defendable total to bowl at. He eventually fell for 28 trying to find the boundary leaving Kelso 76-7. Some valuable runs from Kelso’s young lower order ensured they had something to defend, ending the innings 90 all out.

Kelso knew they needed a quick start and early wickets and that is exactly what they got. Connelly continued his form with the bat getting Kelso off to be best possible start clean bowling A. Allugubelli for 4 with the score 7-1. Into the fourth over, and after being hit for 4, Kelso’s young opening bowler C. Pollhammer bowled a lovely in-swinging delivery that was caught by G. Davidson at mid-off and Kelso had their tails up. The young lad was not finished there picking up another wicket in his following over to restrict Dunfermline & Carnegie to 17-3. After several very close LBW shouts J. Connelly finally got his second wicket of the afternoon dismissing G. Grover for 3 as the visitors stumbled to 26-4.

A change in the attack brought little change to the visitors’ fortune with Kelso Captain G. Davidson getting two quick wickets, both taken very well by J. Recourt behind the stumps. With the score at 40-6 the heavens opened and the covers were pushed on. Thankfully the players were off for little over 10 minutes before the cloud cover over Shedden Park began to break.

Needing 4 wickets Kelso dug deep and after a steady partnership of 23 between V. Reddy and S. Rowley, J. Connelly picked up his final wicket of the afternoon clean bowling V. Reddy for 13. C. Davidson then got Kelso within one wicket of victory by picking up two quick wickets. Only needing 10 to win the pressure was on the young Kelso side who stuck together to bowl Dunfermline out for 80.

A positive start from a young Kelso side who showed great character and togetherness to get across the line, with everyone playing their part in the field. Kelso travel to Grange Loan on Sunday to take on Carlton Thirds hoping to build on the victory.

2022 AGM : Wednesday 23rd February 2022

AGM’s aren’t unnecessary and boring!!

There’s a lot to running a successful Club like KCC and we could really do with some more volunteers to help spread the load.  Nowadays everyone is short of time so we believe lots of volunteers fulfilling smaller roles is the way forward rather than a few doing everything.  Check out the document below for ways you could help and come along to our AGM on Wednesday 23rd February to offer your support.

Final arrangements for the AGM will be announced on Facebook.  YOUR CRICKET CLUB NEEDS YOU!!

Brian Lang

We are extremely sad to share news of the passing of our beloved groundsman Brian “Langy” Lang.

For decades, Brian was the heart and soul of Kelso Cricket Club. He kept our ground in impeccable condition year after year and was always on point to help out whatever the circumstances. He was extremely kind and generous to all, even extending his own home to some of our Overseas Pros to ensure they felt comfortable during their time in Kelso and in the process making friends for life.

Put simply, he was an absolutely joy to be around, and will be truly missed by everyone at the Club and in the local community.

Thank you for everything, Mr Lang. We know you’ll be looking down on Shedden Park for years to come.

KCC : 200th Anniversary Dinner
